Confidence is often the forgotten key to learning a new language effectively. If you truly believe you can’t do something, then you will likely sabotage your efforts. On the flip side, if you believe you can, then your chances of becoming fluent one day increase dramatically. Confidence will also become ever stronger with more regular practice and feedback. As a part of that practice, it is so important to speak more when you get the opportunity to do so. In all my classes I encourage the students to use longer sentences when they speak. This helps get them into a habit of actually using what they’ve been taught, in person with a native English speaking teacher. Students should not try to dismiss questions with one-word answers, but rather use every opportunity to speak in longer sentences with more complicated grammar.
When a student speaks, it is best to maintain a straight back, make eye contact with the listener, and to speak with confidence. If the grammar is not perfect immediately, it is really not a problem. The important thing is to try and to try with strong intention.
